Conductance of mesoscopic systems with magnetic impurities

چکیده
We investigate the combined effects of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field on the interference contribution to the conductance of disordered metals. We show that in a metal with weak spin-orbit interaction, the polarization of impurity spins reduces the rate of electron phase relaxation, thus enhancing the weaklocalization correction to conductivity. Magnetic field also suppresses thermal fluctuations of magnetic impurities, leading to a recovery of the conductance fluctuations. This recovery occurs regardless of the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. We calculate the magnitudes of the weak-localization correction and of the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations at an arbitrary level of the spin polarization induced by a magnetic field. Our analytical results for the ‘‘h/e’’ Aharonov-Bohm conductance oscillations in metal rings can be used to extract the spin and gyromagnetic factor of magnetic impurities from existing experimental data.

Aharonov-Bohm effect as a probe of interaction between magnetic impurities.
We study the effects of the RKKY interaction between magnetic impurities on the mesoscopic conductance fluctuations of a metal ring with dilute magnetic impurities. At sufficiently low temperatures and strong magnetic fields, the loss of electron coherence occurs mainly due to the scattering off rare pairs of strongly coupled magnetic impurities. We establish a relation between the dephasing ra...
متن کاملConductance in a periodically doped quantum wire
Abstract In this paper we will give a short rewiew about the conductance of a mesoscopic waveguide strip with a few impurities. Green-function method is used allowing to treat systems with low number of impurities, not only the completly clean case. Investigating a wire containing Diracdelta potentials (modelling the impurities) we found that increasing number of impurities can cause a transiti...
متن کاملMesoscopic fluctuations of conductance of a helical edge contaminated by magnetic impurities.
Elastic backscattering of electrons moving along the helical edge is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry. We demonstrate, however, that an ensemble of magnetic impurities may cause time-reversal symmetry-preserving quasielastic backscattering, resulting in interference effects in the conductance. The characteristic energy transferred in a backscattering event is suppressed due to the Ruderman-...
متن کاملEffect of Impurities in the Channel of a Spin Field Effect Transistor (SPINFET)
We show that the conductance of Spin Field Effect Transistors (SPINFET) [Datta and Das, Appl. Phys. Lett., 56, 665 (1990)] is affected by a single (non-magnetic) impurity in the transistor’s channel. The extreme sensitivity of the amplitude and phase of the transistor’s conductance oscillations to the location of a single impurity in the channel is reminiscent of the phenomenon of universal con...

In recent years, semiconductor nanostructures have become the model systems of choice for investigation of electrical conduction on short length scales. Quantum transport is studied in a two dimensional electron gas because of the combination of a large Fermi wavelength and large mean free path. In the present work, a numerical method is implemented in order to contribute to the understanding ...
